Just Keep Swimming: Why Every Child Needs Someone Who Will Show Up

If you’ve ever watched Disney’s Finding Nemo, you probably remember Dory’s famous words: “Just keep swimming.”

While those three words may seem simple, they carry a powerful message about perseverance, hope, and continuing forward even when the path ahead is uncertain.

As I reflect on Father’s Day and the month of June, I find myself thinking about Marlin, Nemo’s father. Marlin was not perfect. He was fearful. He worried. He made mistakes. He sometimes allowed his fears to influence his decisions. Yet one thing remained constant throughout the entire movie: his commitment to his child.

No matter how difficult the journey became, Marlin kept going.

He crossed the ocean. He faced challenges he never expected. He encountered setbacks and moments when giving up may have seemed easier. Yet his love, determination, and commitment to finding Nemo never wavered.

That unwavering commitment reminds me of something we see every day at Atlanta CASA.

Children who enter foster care often find themselves navigating circumstances they did not choose. Their worlds may change quickly. They may experience uncertainty, transitions, and challenges that no child should have to face alone.

During those times, one consistent adult can make an incredible difference.

At Atlanta CASA, our Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers serve as that consistent presence. They show up. They listen. They learn. They advocate. They celebrate successes and remain present during challenges. Most importantly, they help ensure that a child’s voice is heard.

Like Marlin, CASA volunteers continue moving forward even when the path is not always straightforward.

Advocacy is not about having all the answers. It is about being present. It is about remaining committed. It is about believing that every child deserves someone who will stand beside them and help them navigate life’s challenges.

As we celebrate Father’s Day this month, we also recognize the many individuals who positively impact the lives of children every day. Fathers, grandfathers, mentors, coaches, educators, relatives, community leaders, and CASA volunteers all have the ability to shape a child’s future through their presence, encouragement, and support.

Many of us can look back on our own lives and identify someone who showed up when we needed guidance, reassurance, or someone to believe in us. Often, it is not a single grand gesture that leaves the greatest impact. It is the consistency. It is knowing someone cares. It is knowing someone is willing to walk alongside you.

Children in foster care deserve that same opportunity.

This month, I encourage each of us to consider how we can be a source of encouragement and support for the children and families in our communities. Whether through volunteering, mentoring, advocating, or simply extending compassion, every action contributes to a stronger future for a child.

At Atlanta CASA, we are grateful for the volunteers, supporters, community partners, and advocates who continue to show up for children every day. Your commitment helps create brighter possibilities and reminds children that they are not alone.

Just like Marlin, we may not always know exactly what lies ahead. But when we remain committed, continue advocating, and keep moving forward, we can help children reach brighter shores.

So this month, and every month, let us continue to do what matters most.

Let us keep showing up.

Let us keep advocating.

And let us keep swimming.
