Our Volunteers

volunteers
A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a trained community volunteer who is appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of an abused or neglected child involved in juvenile court deprivation proceedings. The CASA volunteer gathers information about the child’s situation, attends court proceedings and makes a recommendation to the judge so that the judge has the information to make a decision about the child’s future. A CASA volunteer protects a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the safe embrace of a loving family.

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month!

Dr. Felicia Tillman

Dr. Felicia Tillman is no stranger to the foster care system. Growing up in DeKalb County, she and her older sister bounced from home to home for most of their childhoods. Perhaps, this is the reason Dr. Tillman is a Licensed Professional Counselor and an advocate for youth still today. Dr. Tillman celebrates ten years of being a Court Appointed Special Advocate for Atlanta CASA this year. She is also a facilitator, helping to usher future CASAs into this much needed advocacy work, with their toolboxes full of best practices.

Maria White-Dumas

I volunteer as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) since 11/2019, ensuring children have a voice in the court system, and proudly serve as a board member for my community civic league, where I help strengthen neighborhood ties. My goal is to continue growing as an advocate, a leader, and a connector within my community. When I’m not working or volunteering, you can find me spending time with my family and friends, encouraging strong marriages, or enjoying my love for crafting. I believe that small acts of service, done with great love, create the most meaningful impact.

Sonya Ko

Sonya Ko worked over 30 years in the corporate sector with Accenture, Marakon UK, American Express AUS/NZ and SunTrust Bank focusing on Strategy, Business Analysis and Finance. She is now channeling her experience into causes she believe in such as Education and Women by serving as a Board Member at the Paideia School, Global Village Project (school for refugee girls) and Her Term (electing progressive women into Georgia politics). Sonya Ko holds an Industrial Engineering degree with Honors from Georgia Tech and a MBA from the Yale School of Management. Sonya Ko has been a CASA since June 2020.

Ivey Hamby

Ivey Hamby grew up in Suwanee, Georgia, and graduated from the University of Georgia before launching a career in advertising and marketing. Over the years, she has grown into a senior leadership role, where she focuses on building meaningful connections between brands and the people they serve. Beyond her day job, giving back to the community is something Ivey cares deeply about. Since March 2023, she has served as a CASA Volunteer in Atlanta, where she has served three children and their communities. She also previously volunteered with the Ryan Seacrest Foundation at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, helping create uplifting, creative experiences for young patients.

Yolanda Shelton

I believe every child deserves to live up to their full potential regardless of their background, what a child has endured, or any other obstacles that stand in their way. I want to help find a pathway for those children that are victims of abuse and neglect. To show children their circumstances does not determine their outcome. Though life may seem they were dealt a bad hand, however any hand can be a “winning” hand through with the help such as organization like CASA, determination, and above all, faith. My deep commitment is to helping children who are victims of abuse and neglect, and to share my perspective on the importance of supporting these young individuals to achieve their full potential, regardless of the challenges they face.

Michelle Clark

I have volunteered as an Atlanta CASA Volunteer since 2016. I was inspired to become a CASA Volunteer because I had spoken to family members and coworkers who shared with me the impact their CASA had on supporting their families throughout the family court process. I wanted to utilize my time and experience to make a positive impression on the children and their families on what support looks like within the justice system. The most rewarding part of being a CASA Volunteer is seeing the recognition in the child’s eyes of recognition and safety when you visit them at their homes or schools. Although this situation is a temporary period for these children, it is an opportunity to make a lifetime impact on demonstrating what genuine kindness and support should look like.

Byron Wilson

Byron Wilson

I began my CASA journey in March 2023 and was assigned a complex case involving a 12-year-old boy with autism who lost his mother during COVID. After his sister could no longer manage his care, DFCS stepped in and eventually placed him in a specialized out-of-state program. Over 20 months, I’ve worked closely with DFCS to support his progress. His father relinquished parental rights, and former caseworker Ms. Knight—now with a master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis—has returned as a potential foster mother. This case has been challenging but incredibly rewarding, deepening my knowledge and commitment as a CASA volunteer.

Additionally, she supported another youth who was involved in a school shooting, working diligently to ensure the child received the therapy and emotional support needed to begin healing. Beyond case advocacy, she has tirelessly supported the foster parent, who has cared for children in her home for over four years. The volunteer has been a consistent source of encouragement and assistance, helping the caregiver navigate challenges and remain a stable, nurturing presence for the children. Her generosity extends beyond the courtroom—she assists annually with Atlanta CASA’s Holiday Wrap event, and her employer helps provide much-needed clothing for foster children each year.
