Our Volunteers

A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a trained community volunteer who is appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of an abused or neglected child involved in juvenile court deprivation proceedings. The CASA volunteer gathers information about the child’s situation, attends court proceedings and makes a recommendation to the judge so that the judge has the information to make a decision about the child’s future. A CASA volunteer protects a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the safe embrace of a loving family.
April is Volunteer Appreciation Month!
Other CASA Volunteers of Note
Meryl See / 2 yrs of service - Judge Turner acknowledged the exceptional contributions this volunteer made to the case and specifically requested that she remain involved through the next court hearing—even after the child has turned 18. Her continued commitment demonstrates the profound impact a CASA Volunteer can have on a young person’s life, especially during critical transitions into adulthood.
Shion Nagasaka / 2.5 yrs of service - This dedicated CASA volunteer has gone above and beyond in every case he has taken on. He played a vital role in assisting the successful reunification of a child with autism with both his mother and father—ensuring the family had the resources and support needed for stability. He also supported a family of seven, with three of the children on his caseload, helping them achieve permanency through placement with their grandmother in Mississippi. Currently, he is serving a caseload of three children—two in one home and one in another—and continues to provide exceptional service, advocacy, and support. His commitment to the children and families he serves exemplifies the heart and mission of Atlanta CASA.
Dhamana Onaje- 5/30/19 (5 years) - This incredible CASA Volunteer has gone above and beyond in their commitment to supporting a child in foster care. Brianna Flowers- 8/20/19 (5 years) - This dedicated CASA Volunteer has gone above and beyond to support a child in foster care. Through their tireless efforts—not only advocating in court but also working closely with the child’s parents and providing valuable resources—they helped create the stability and support needed for a life-changing outcome. Because of their commitment, this child’s journey led to a permanent, loving home through adoption.
Grace Brewington - 1yr - In her first CASA case, Grace worked with children from Israel who had made their way to Georgia seeking asylum. Through her advocacy, the children were ultimately reunited with their father. Grace approached the complex international dynamics of the case with compassion, diligence, and respect for cultural nuance. In her current case, she is advocating for two young children and has been working closely with their maternal grandparents—who, despite not having raised small children in years, are opening their hearts and home to provide a safe and loving environment for their grandchildren. Grace exemplifies what it means to be a CASA volunteer—offering unwavering support, thoughtful engagement, and true advocacy for the best interest of the children she serves.
Katie Brackett - 4.5 yrs - This CASA Volunteer has gone above and beyond in her service to the children on her caseload and their foster family. Her dedication and hands-on involvement have made a lasting impact in the lives of those she serves. She played an instrumental role in helping a youth remain in school following an after-school incident that resulted in suspension, advocating for the child’s continued education and stability. Additionally, she supported another youth who was involved in a school shooting, working diligently to ensure the child received the therapy and emotional support needed to begin healing. Beyond case advocacy, she has tirelessly supported the foster parent, who has cared for children in her home for over four years. The volunteer has been a consistent source of encouragement and assistance, helping the caregiver navigate challenges and remain a stable, nurturing presence for the children. Her generosity extends beyond the courtroom—she assists annually with Atlanta CASA’s Holiday Wrap event, and her employer helps provide much-needed clothing for foster children each year. She is a true example of what it means to serve with heart, purpose, and dedication.
These incredible volunteers have made lasting contributions to Atlanta CASA—not only through their dedicated service but also through the meaningful impact they’ve had on the lives of the children we serve. Their unwavering commitment, compassionate advocacy, and consistent support have helped shape brighter futures for children in foster care.
We are truly grateful for the difference they make every single day. Thank you for being the heart of our mission.
